What is Hypnobirthing – a guest post by Katie Yorath

Katie Yorath is a qualified Hypnobirthing Instructor offering bespoke, private courses in Southampton, Eastleigh, and surrounding areas. She is also a qualified volunteer breastfeeding Peer Supporter with Bursledon Breastfeeding Babes.

Often parents to be contact me feeling anxious and unprepared about the prospect of giving birth, understandably so considering the negative stories that are so often shared by the media and 'helpful' family and friends. We've been conditioned to believe that birth is inherently unsafe. These thoughts are built up over many years of being exposed to these negative stories, filed away in our minds for future reference.
Hypnobirthing is different approach to traditional antenatal education. In my sessions, through self hypnosis (which is basically entering into a deeply relaxed state, no mind control here!), we focus on replacing those negative thoughts and beliefs with positive ones. Over time and with practice, this has the immense benefit of allowing you to approach labour with a far more positive mindset. Combined with effective breathing techniques, visualisation techniques and positive affirmations, you will feel like you have an extra set of tools to help with your labour, whichever route it takes.
There are a lot of similarities between hypnobirthing and sports psychology training. A positive mindset is key when focusing on sporting goals, through affirmations, mindfulness, and visualisation. There is huge connection between your body and mind!
I also cover the physiology of your body in labour, biomechanical techniques to help get your baby into the optimum position, birth hormones, birth environment, practical ways you can prepare for labour and how your birth partner can get involved and not feel like a bystander! They are a key player in the birth space and knowing how to support you in labour is one area I focus on too. I also offer ongoing support right up to the birth.
My courses are pragmatic, and don't focus on achieving a specific type of birth; hypnobirthing is useful in every scenario. I have positive induction and caesarean stories on my website and I teach a Positive Caesarean Workshop, as the techniques are helpful in these circumstances too.
